Who Are We?
The Sewanhaka Federation of Teachers is the official bargaining agent of the more than
700 professional employees of the Sewanhaka Central High School District. Our members
include classroom teachers, guidance counselors, psychologists, social workers,
library-media specialists, teaching assistants and professional nurses.
The SFT is affiliated with the 2.4 million member National Education Association
and its state affiliate National
Education Association of New York
merged with NYSUT to form a single state union
in NYS. Due to the merger we are
also affiliated with American Federation of Teachers.
The SFT is also a participant in the
Nassau TRACT Teacher Center.
As the official advocate and exclusive representative of the professional staff of the
Sewanhaka CHSD, the SFT seeks to
- promote the professional, economic and social welfare of our members
- promote the educational advancement of the students of the Sewanhaka CHSD
- raise the standards of the education profession in our state and nation
- secure the enactment of legislation favorable to the interests of public education and
public education employees
- promote the participation of the professional staff in the formulation of educational
policies
- work with the Board of Education and members of the community to ensure the highest
standards of educational excellence in the Sewanhaka CHSD
The SFT is committed to the ideal that educators, students and the community at large
constitute a community of interest whose needs can best be advanced through cooperation
and mutual respect.
